ANCIENT GREEK GOD PAN

Hi, my name is Pan. I am the god of shepherds and of music. Im the son of Hermes and a nymph.

I was born with the legs and horns of a goat, which caused my own mother to abandone me. One of my loves, a nymph, ran away from me and she was transformed into a reed, which inspired me to invent the reed, a wind musical instrument.

I am considered to be the cause of the sudden fear that sometimes comes for no reason, especially in lonely places. I was the only god who has died and never returned.

Hi, my name is Persephone, in the Greek mythology I was the daughter of Demeter (goddess of agriculture) and Zeus (god of the gods, and the sky). At the time I was an adolescent, Hades (god of the underworld) fell in love with me, wanting me to marry him. Although my father Zeus agreed with the wedding, Demeter, my mother didn’t accept it. So, Hades caught me while I was looking for flowers in the forest and led me to his kingdom. When my mother went out in search of me, she never found me and remained very sad for a long period of time. All the plants died and hunger devastated the land. For this motive, my dad Zeus sends his messenger Hermes to look for me at the underworld. Hades obviously didn’t agreed with returning me back home, so he gave me just before leaving the underworld a bunch of seeds called pomegranate. I ate them and return to the underworld forever. Then, my father and Hades ended up reaching an agreement; I would spend half of the year in his world, and half with my mother. Finally everyone accepted and agreed with that solution. Is for this reason, that for the half of the year everything blooms, for the rest of it, when I return to the underworld, the winter arrives, there’s a lot of rain and ice. And that’s how the seasons were created, I became the queen of the underworld and goddess of innocence.

Phyramus and Thisbe

I am Phyramus the handsomest youth, and I am Thisbe the fairest maiden. We both lived in Babylonia, where Semiramis reigned, and we are also neighbors. Our love was greater than anyone’s, but our parents didn`t want us together. For our fortune, there was a crack in the wall that separated our houses, through which we tried to tell us our feelings by tender messages. Our love was so big that we could not resist anymore leaving separated, that’s why we decided to escape, where our parents could not find us. We agreed in leaving our houses at night, and meet at the tomb of Ninus, the one who arrives first, should wait for the other at the foot of a certain tree, a mulberry tree next to a small lake. I waited until all my family was asleep, and then I covered my head with a veil so that none recognized me. I arrived first than Phyramus, so I had to wait for him. I saw a very big lion, coming out of the trees, with his bloody mouth. I hided in the hollow of a rock. But I didn’t notice that I had dropped my veil.
When the lion finished drinking in the small lake, he saw my veil and he started to play with it, living it with blood. When I Phyramus came, I saw the lion steps and the veil with blood. I thought it was Thisbe`s blood, so I started to blame my self for not being there on time to safe her. So I also decided to die to be with my lover. I took my sword and plunged it in my heart. My blood that dropped into the earth, reached inside the tree roots transforming the white mulberries into red. When I Thisbe, noticed that the tree had changed its color, I recognized my lover. I started to cry, I was very sad I didn’t knew what to do. I looked at his sword and I decided it was time to be together, so I plunged it into my breast. Our bodies were buried in one sepulchre, and the tree ever after had purple berries.

Eros and Psyche

I’m the Greek god of love, son of Aphrodite and my roman name is cupid. Psyche is A mortal princess whose Aphrodite is jealous of, but who was chosen by me to be his bride. My mom Aphrodite call’s me, to shoot one of my arrows, which poisoned immortal and mortal alike with love, at Psyche, while she was sleeping. Accidentally I poked myself with the poisoned arrow. I gets in love with Psyche and Aphrodite was very mad at me, because of not obey her orders. One day i awoke very angry because Psyche by the pressure of her sister thinks that I was a monster, and she goes to prove that with a candle. By mistake Psyche let a drop of candle liquid in my face so that’s why I go very mad. Finally I forgave Psyche we go to live together. Psyche became the goddess of the soul.

SISYPHUS

My name is Sisyphus; I am founder and king of Corinth. I am considered as a clever and rebellious hero in Greek mythology although I was punished for doing some things. First I cheat some of the Gods by steeling some secrets, then I was accused of the disappearance of Egina and later I almost die, fortunately I returned to earth and prove my wife chastity. I was chastised by working on the underworld with Ades, but I didn’t like it so I kept Ades on a closet for one day. I was reported by this action so I was punished on Tartamus for eternity. My punishment was rolling a rock uphill and then watched it roll down again.

POSEIDON Juan Pablo Valencia H.

My name is Poseidon and I am known as the god of sea, god of earthquakes and the god of horses. I was one of the six siblings that divided the power of the world and in the division I became the ruler of sea.
I am someone that does things depending on my temperament. When I am in a good mood I create new lands in the water and calm the sea, but when I am in a bad mood I strike the ground with a trident and cause earthquakes and ship wrecks.
I have a story that involves me and the goddess of war, Athena fighting for the city of Athens. Finally Athena won by giving the olive people of Athens the olive tree. In my anger over that decision, I flooded the attic plain. However, Athena and I worked together by combining our powers. Later I used my powers of earthquakes, water, and horses to inflict fear and punishment on people as revenge.
Finally I was the one who helped the Greeks during the Trojan War. I am an essential character in the study of Greek mythology.

Laura arbelaez- Orpheus and Eurydice

This is a story of beauty and tragedy. Orpheus was the best musician that ever lived. His music was said to be so beautiful that it would soothe animals. He married to Eurydice. Aristaeus tried to violate her and while she was trying to scape she fell and was biten by a snake and died. Orpheus was so sad that he decided to go for her to the underworld. Hades would return Eurydice to Orpheus, but warned him very carefully: Eurydice would follow him into the light of the world and once she entered the sunlight she would be changed from a shade back to a woman. But if Orpheus looked back to see her, she would be lost to him forever. He could not resist and she disappear forever. The rest of his life he spend it playing songs that called for death.

My father was Iasus or Schoeneus. I was the female athlete in Greek myth. I was also known for participation in male activities time having an aura of sexuality surrounding her. One of those participation was in Calyodonial Boar Hunt, I was the first shot an arrow to pierce the boar, so because of these Meleager gave me the boar's pelt. Unfortunaly my father wanted me to married, so I decided to make a plan that was to make a race and if I won I could kill the man, but if he won I need to married with him. That man was Melanion but he was in love with me so he wanted to win the race so he went to aphrodite and she gave him some apple so in the race I stop for taking the apples and he won.

· Aphrodite is the goddess of love, beauty and sexual rapture.

· Roman name Venus

· She was born when Uranus (the father of the gods) was castrated by his son Cronus. Cronus threw the severed genitals into the ocean which began to churn and foam about them.

· After her birth, Zeus was afraid that the gods would fight over Aphrodite's hand in marriage so he married her off to the smith god Hephaestus, the steadiest of the gods.

· Aphrodite loved and was loved by many gods and mortals. Among her mortal lovers, the most famous was perhaps Adonis. Some of her sons are Eros, Anteros, Hymenaios and Aeneas.

· Aphrodite was very generous in using her powers to help her followers.

· Aphrodite also used her powers to destroy those who tried to disrupt or prevent the natural workings of love and sexuality.

MAIN STORY

The Judgement of Paris
The gods and goddesses as well as various mortals were invited to the marriage of Peleus and Thetis (the eventual parents of Achilles). Only the goddess Eris (Discord) was not invited, but she arrived with a golden apple inscribed with the words "to the fairest," which she threw among the goddesses. Aphrodite, Hera and Athena all claimed to be the fairest, and thus the rightful owner of the apple. The goddesses chose to place the matter before Zeus, who later put the choice into the hands of Paris. Hera tried to bribe Paris with Asia Minor, while Athena offered wisdom, fame and glory in battle, but Aphrodite whispered to Paris that if he were to choose her as the fairest he would have the most beautiful mortal woman in the world as a wife, and he accordingly chose her. This woman was Helen. The other goddesses were enraged by this and through Helen's abduction by Paris they brought about the Trojan War.

Dionysus

I am Dionysus or Bacchus as the roams call me. I am the god of wine. Son of the mighty Zeus and Semele, princes of Thebes. I am known for the intoxication power of my wine, and the nature. I can control nature and I am recognized and wanted among mortals. I can be killed as a mortal, but each time I die, winter comes with me killing nature and humans crops. But I have the power to reborn again, and that is when spring comes.

One day my father Zeus was mad at Semele, and he killed her with a light storm. After my mother was sent to the underworld, I went after her and brought her back to life and I’m also known as a god who brought someone back to life.

The king of Crete, Midas founded one day one of my son Silenus wondering in his land, and after he recognized him, he gave him great hospitality and then gave him back to me. To show him my appreciation I gave him the power of "the golden touch". Anything he touched will become gold. Due to he’s greed, I indirectly punished him by making him kill her daughter when he touched her. I’m also known for punishing mortals when they act foolish or with dishonor.

HERA

I am Hera, but my Roman name is Juno, I am the goddess of marriage and Zeus is my husband and younger brother.
My parents were Cronus and Rhea, when I was born, I was abruptly swallowed due to a prophesy that stated that one of Cronus’ children would take over his throne, but this was hided to Zeus and when he grew older, he saved all my brothers and sisters and killed Cronus.
I am the reigning female goddess at Olympus. There are many temples that had been worshipped to me throughout Greece: in Olympia, Corinth, Tiryns, Perachora and the sacred island of Delos, and the most important ones were constructed for me. Mycenaeans celebrate festivals in my honor called “Heraia”.
I am best known for my stories of jealousy toward Zeus. One of them was long time ago with a nymph named Echo, she had the job to distract me from Zeus’ adventures talking intensively to him, when I discovered the deception, I cursed Echo to only repeat words of others. I have acts of jealousy even with Zeus sons. I hate Heracles, son of Zeus, when he was young, I sent snakes to attack him and later I enthused up the entire Amazon against him, because I didn’t want Zeus to pay attention at him more than to me.
I have two sons: Ares and Hephastus; and three daughters: Eilithyia, Eris and Hebe. I have magical abilities and I can cast spells to change the form of size and appearance of others.

I was the first woman that existed on Earth, and I am the goddess of evil. Zeus and a group of Titans where fighting for power, but Zeus and the other gods defeated Titans. Later Prometheus stole fire from Olympus, this make Zeus very angry because he warned Prometheus not giving fire. After mortal men received fire, Zeus create another gift to compensate, and there I was created. It was in revenge that Zeus create me to bring misery and evil to human raze. Each god gave me different gifts, and they make me beautiful and perfect. I have a jar that have all the words evils, know I release it and in this moment mortal people have hunger, war , poorness and all this stiff that makes the world what it is today.

Narcissus

Hi, my name is Narcissus and you all might know me because of loving myself. I am the daughter of Endymion, and Selene, the moon. My beauty is so extensive, that it is compare to those of Adonis, Endymion, and Hylas. When I was born, Tyresias asked the seer if I would live a long life and she replied: “If he never knows himself”.

When I was sixteen years old, Echo, the nymph fell in love with me. But I didn’t love her, so she went to the mountains and disappeared. Since that moment, every other nymph fell in love with me. But I didn’t love them back, so I ignored them. After rejecting them, one nymph prayed that anyone would love me, but that I would be the only one loving me. Nemesis heard that pray, and while I was walking I saw my reflection on a pool and fell in love with myself. Don’t you think I am so beautiful?

Because I couldn’t have what I saw on the pool, I died of sorrow by the same pool. After I died, anybody found my body; instead, they found the flower that was named after me. Some people keep telling that I live in the river Styx, in the Underworld, but I would not reveal to anybody where do I really live.

ARACHNE

Hi, my name is Arachne. I came from Lydia. Some people think im a princess because of my art and some other says that Athena teaches me in the art of weaving. When I heard that Athena teach me and gave her all the credit, I get very upset because Athena didn’t teach me to do anything and she isn’t better than me, but when Athena heard that, she went looking for me, very angry. The first thing she told me was not to offend the Gods, because they will punish me.
I challenge her, and if I loose, the Gods will punish me in any way. Athena began to weave the scene of her contest with Poseidon for the city of Athens. A beautiful scene developed from the threads, showing Poseidon and the salt water spring, and Athena with an olive tree, gifts to the people who would name Athena as their patron, and their city after her. Then was my turn and I created a tapestry showcasing scenes of Zeus' various infidelities: Leda with the Swan, Europe with the bull, Danaë and the golden rain shower. The guilt was too deep for my mortal mind and I hanged my self. Athena brought me to live again, but not as a human. She transformed me into a spider, the first spider in the world.

I am Perseus, mostly remembered for the killing of the Gorgon Medusa. My Parents were Jupiter (Zeus) and Danaë. When I was little my father alarmed by an oracle that told him I will be the instrument of his death, he sent me on a chest to the seas. The chest floated toward Seriphus, where I was found by a fisherman. Fortunately the man took me to Polydectes, the king of the country who treat us with kindness. Time passed, and when I grew up Polydectes sent me to kill Medusa.
Medusa was a terrible monster that laid on the country. She has been once a beautiful maiden known by her beautiful hair, unlucky her she dare with Minerva to vie in beauty. The goodness disadvantaged her of her charms and changed her beautiful hair into horrible serpents. Medusa became a cruel monster of such a terrible aspect, that every living thing that saw her immediately turned into stone. It was believed that her cavern was covered with stony figures of animals and men who had once saw her and had been petrified with the sight.
Returning to my life story, when I was sent to attempt the conquest of Medusa, I received both, Minerva and Mercury’s help. The way I kill her was very simple, I enter to her cavern while she slept. Taking care of not looking at her directly, I used her reflection on the shield I wore. What I do next, was cut off her head ending with her life. Finally I gave the horrible creature head to Minerva.

I am recognize for the toach of gold with my fingertip. I am the king of Phrygia, a region nowadays part of Turkey. My life used to be normal until one day. My armhands brought me a creatures part man, mart goat that they had caught napping in the vineyard. I inmediately recognize him, he was Silenus; son of the god Dionysus, and I order him to set free. Silensu and Dionysus were so impresse with my kindness, so Dinysus decide to consider me a wish. I decide that my wish was: that everything I touch would become gold. Sorprised with my new talent, I began to touch everything i can, I began with some fruits and then a stool and then a woody lambkin, buth these become in gold, even my oun daugther; she was transformed into a life-size golden statue. At the end I realize that this was not a good talent, and even I havent nake a good choise. fortunately, Dinysus was a good god and he allows me to was away my touch of gold in teh river Pactolus.

Hi, my name is Icarus and my father is Daedulus, he was a great architect and inventor, we lived in Athens, unfortunately in never knew who was my mother. He is known for

Some of his creations were the wooden cow he constructed for the queen Pasiphae and the Labyrinth of the Minotaur at Knossos. He worked for the King Minos and the Queen Pariphae in Crete. Once he created two pair of wings made of wax and feathers to escape from the city and get away from Minos before he brought us harm. Before gave me the wings he warned me not to fly to close to the sun or to the ocean. Flying to close to the sky would melt the wax and the wings would destroy, and flying to close to the ocean would dampen the wax and the wings would destroy. The trip was successfully made and we flew over the city.
I really enjoyed flying and one day I began to fly and forgot that I couldn’t fly to close to the sun, the sun melted the wax that was holding together my wings and I fell to the Icarian Sea, where I died drowned. Some say Heracles that was passing through the sea found me dead and gave me burial. Daedulus spent the rest of his life escaping from city-state to city-state from Minos, that each time offered a bigger reward to the person who found me.

ACHILLES

Hi, my name is Achilles and you all might know me as being the greatest warrior and hero that ever lived in Greece. My Roman name is Akhilleus and if you write it in Greek it would be "Ἀχιλλεύς". You may know much other facts about me such as me being the most handsome Greek warrior and being the hero of the Trojan War.

I was born in mortal Farsala, Thessaly. My father was the mortal Peleus, king of the Myrmidons and the sea nymph Thetis.

Many people know some characteristics of me such as being invunerable in any part of my body except my heel. The reason for this is that when I was little, my mother dipped me in the river Styx. Nevertheless, she forgot to uncover my heel from where she was holding me so that part kept forever unprotected.

People also say that I held a love relationship with my cousin Patroclus. He, was killed by the Trojan Prince Hector. In my hatred and revenge I went to seek Hector out and held with him an epic one-to-one man battle in the outsides of Troy. I defeated him and tied his body to a chariot and dragged him around the city for nine days. Along with this, many people say that I was a ruthless and hateful person. I completely deny this since I gave back Hector's body to his father, Priam, in a demostration of mercy.

Then, the Trojan War continued and with the help of Odysseus' Trojan Horse, we invaded the city and took it over. Nevertheless, Hector's brother, the coward Paris, shot me with an arrow exactly in my heel. There, in the middle of Troy, I died.

Although I died, my legacy is remebered forever mainly due to a book that was written describing my wrath: my adventures and problems. This book was the "Illiad" written by Homer where he also includes my interactions and troubles with the gods such as Aphrodite and Apollo.

Due to all of this, I am known as one of the greatest warriors that ever lived.

I am one of the members of the olympians. since my brothers Zeus and poseidon are encharged of the sky and the oceans, I have not choise to be the king of the underworld and the dead.

Hades is my name but in Rome I am best known as Pluto cerberus and vident.

comparing to my brother zeus my reputation with women is not so as a womanizer because I ruled the realm of the dead alone. This was until i get in love with the doughter of zeus and demeter, the godess persephone.

After Demeter her mom realize she was here with me in the underworld, she make a curse in the lands of no grow of crops and fertility. she was in search of persephone. after some wile Zeus send Hermes to negociate with the release of persephone and her freedom. she finaly left, but really she is attached to the underworld for ever after I gave her some seeds of the pomegrenate.

Hi, my name is Zeus!

You might know me as the powerful ruler of the sky, controller of rain and cloud, and master of lightning. I overthrew my father, Cronus, and took over everything, giving the sea to my brother Poseidon and the underworld to my brother Hades.

I have sort of a bad reputation as a womanizer. I mean, I love my wife, Hera, but there are just so many beautiful women on earth, that I can’t help being a little bit unfaithful from time to time.

I’m really a nice guy, but please, don’t make me angry unless you want to see a heck of a storm. I have a bit of a short temper, and I really hate to be tricked. No one is more powerful than me…. except maybe Fate. But until she catches up to me, I’ll keep living the life of the most famous Greek God ever to live on Mount Olympus!

This is me, last year after Hera tricked me and stole Io away!

Both men and women tipically wore SLEEVELESS TUNICS:

°MEN TUNICS: Shorter than women tunics.

For common people the usual color was PLAIN.

Greeks during WINTER wore a heavy wool cloak for warmth.

Greek Religion

Citizens thought that Religion would make the life better and longer. They also believe that their Gods would take care of them after dead.
Their religion was Polytheistic, which means that they believe in many different Goddesses.

God and Goddess

Greek people built up temples in every town for each God. In these temples they pray and sacrificed animals as a gift. The entire Greek people think that the goddess live in the top of the Mount Olympus. Zeus was the leader of all the Gods, Hermes was the messenger and Poseidon was the god of the sea.

Government

- The Greek government was divided into monarchies, oligarchies, tyrannies and democracies. This division was made by Aristotle.
- Athens began to use democratic government in 510B.C. Then other Greek city-states began using the same system.
- First Greeks use an empire to rule all the city-states, but this affected the communities because they couldn’t vote.
- Women had no rights.
- Democracy was created so that everyone had the right to give their opinion, also to benefit the middle class.
- Greeks use city-states and began with democracy.
- Democracy began on Greece, and now it is the system of government in most of the world.

*Greek Science & Technology*

Greek civilization created many improvements in science and technology.
Also, there were some characters that created and improve technology in that time.
Archimedes was a Greek mathematician, phsychist and engineer. He explained the
principle of the lever, and worked on mechanics. The screw was another invention
of him, which helped to transfer water. In mathematics, Archimedes aproximate the
value of pie and gave the aproximate value of the square root of 3.

Pythagoras was an other important Greek mathematician. He created the
Pythagorean theorem and the Pythagoreanism religion.

Plato was a Greek philosopher and mathematician, which was the founder of the Academy of Athens. He wrote many philosophical dialogs about metaphysics, structure, women, and epistemology.

There were other inventions made, such as:
The Astrolabe: A device used to determine the location, and longitude.

The Cannon: Created by Ctesibius of Alexandria and first used with compressed air.

Crane: This devise helped Greeks in constructions by lifting heavy materials with less work.

Lever: The lever was a simple but smart way of quickly lifting heavy weights using a counter-weight.

Gears: The gears were the key for many technology inventions of that times and for the future, lever by themselves were useless.

Water Pumps: the water pumps helped to carry water to elevated places having to deal with gravity.

Religion was important to the Greeks because they believed that if they prayed they would have a better life. Also, they would take care of them when they die.

Polytheistic---believed in many Gods

They sacrificed animals, built temples, and had festivals with music, dancing etc. *orcles: holy sites

Greeks believed that Gods and Goddesses lived at Mount Olympus.

Every God had a specific role.

Aphrodite - goddess of love

Ares - god of war

Athena - goddess of war and wisdom

Poseidon - god of the sea

Zeus - king of the gods

Greek life was dominated by religion, so it is not surprising that Greek temples were the biggest and most beautiful. They had political purpose, because they were built in order to celebrate political power and pride, or to offer thanksgiving to the patron of a city for his success in wars.

The Greeks developed 3 architectural systems, called orders, each one had its own characteristics, proportions and details. They were: Doric, Ionic and Corinthian. The Doric style is sturdy (strong) and its top is plain, the Ionic style is thinner and more elegant, and the Corinthian style is rarely used in the Greek world, but is often seen on Roman temples.

The common materials used in the Greek architecture were: wood, used for supports; unbaked brick, used for walls and public buildings; terracotta, used for decoration. Architects used these materials to construct five types of buildings: religious, civic, domestic, funerary and recreational.

Before starting the Classical period, the Greeks had begun to lay out cities in a grid-like pattern, with streets regularly intersecting at right angles, and houses by blocks. The carefully planned civic spaces had become common in the Greek city-states.

The Parthenon is one temple that is very famous and beautiful, but also very basic in its construction. It was built between 447 and 438 BC; it was the fist building to be constructed on the known Acropolis. It is called “octostyle peripteral” because it has 8 columns in the front, and it has in the back a chamber also called the Parthenon.

Ancient Greece Sports

- Many sports existed before Ancient Greece. The relevance of these sports to the Greeks was incredibly important to their culture. Due to this, they created the Olympic Games which were held in a small village of Peloponnesus called Olympia.
- The Olympic Games were a series of competitions between the city–states of Ancient Greece. They were held between 776 BCE until 393 ACE.
- The origin of these competitions is still unknown yet it is claimed that they came from a series of myths such as the ones of Pelops and Heracles.
- The games first started in Olympia, Greece near the sanctuary site of Zeus. They were held every four years calling this period an Olympiad, which was a basis for the calendar system. Over the years, there was a struggle in Greece to control the Olympics.
- Back then, only free men who spoke Greek were allowed to participate. This men had to compete nude due to a law established in 720 BCE.
- The first competition they had was the Stadion Race which consisted of running a length of 180 – 240 meters which was the length of the stadium. Later the Diaulos, Dolichos, Hoplitodromos were introduced as well as some of the common games that exist today that were compacted in the Pentathlon.
- The winner athletes were awarded an olive branch which represented a lot of honor and respect.

Ancient Greek Arts

The ancient Greece culture art has been a strong influence on the culture of many countries from ancient times until the present, especially in the areas of sculpture and architecture.
The art of Ancient Greece is divided into four periods:

-The Geometric

-The Archaic

-The Classical

-The Hellenistic

The Ancient Greeks made pottery for everyday use, not for display.

The history of Ancient Greek pottery is divided into four periods:

-The Protogeometric from about 1050 BC

-The Geometric from about 900 BC

-The Late Geometric or Archaic from about 750 BC

-The Black Figure from the early 7th century BC

-The Red Figure from about 530 BC

The Classical period saw changes in the style of sculptures. Poses became more naturalistic. From about 500 BC statues began to describe real people.

The greatest works of the Classical period were the Statue of Zeus at Olympia and the Statue of Athena Parthenos

Hellenistic period sculptures portraits of men and women of all ages were made, and sculptors no longer felt obliged to describe people as ideals of beauty or physical perfection.

Best Hellenistic sculptures are:

-The Winged Victory of Samothrace.

- The statue of Aphrodite from the island of Melos, known as the Venus de Milo.

THE ORIGIN OF DRAMA

Ancient greek theaters started as religious ceremonies in honor of the gods. (K. Phillips,2004)

Ancient Greek theatre was a mixture of:

music

The Anthenian theatre focused on the God Dionysus and made a theatre in recognition to Dionysus( K. Phillips , 2004)

Dionysus was the God of:

fertility
wine
agriculture
sexuality

The theater was divided in three major parts:

prologue
simple speech
chorus
major episodes, scenes, acts of the play
